RSA Tower

The RSA Tower rises 35-stories over the Mobile waterfront and is Alabama’s tallest building. Thompson Engineering was selected as the geotechnical engineer of record for the design and construction of the $162-million Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) project.

Thompson conducted geotechnical investigations, performed specialized structural foundation finite element analyses, conducted seismic evolutions, and provided recommendations for the design and installation of the auger cast and drilled displacement pile foundations for the office structure. This massive structure required more than 700 auger cast pilings drilled to a depth of 117 feet.

Thompson provided construction inspection and testing services for the placement of the massive concrete foundation, during which more than 11,000 cubic yards of concrete were cast during a 24-hour period. This ranks as one of the largest concrete foundations along the Gulf Coast, requiring approximately 60 concrete trucks per hour. The 7-foot-6-inch thick mat and the supporting pile foundations buttress the building. Thompson also designed and monitored the critical dewatering and braced excavation systems for the project and performed BMP inspections.
