Lyster Hospital Roof Quality Assurance

Thompson Engineering provided Construction Management Services in support of the Fort Rucker Resident office for the roof replacement of Lyster Hospital. The existing roof was in poor condition and the hospital Facility Engineer was not satisfied with previous roof repair attempts. The Facility Engineers turned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) with stringent requirements for a complete roof replacement. Thompson was tasked by the Corps to review the roof replacement request for proposal and submittal package along with the contractor’s work plan for compliance with industry standards to include some specific components pertaining to National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), ICC, IBC, and ASTM. Upon award of the contract, Thompson was tasked with 100% QA inspection which included the following:

  • Observe and report substrate conditions in compliance with specifications and general roofing practices prior to application of subsequent materials;
  • Inspect all materials prior to installation for conformance with contract requirements;
  • Observe and report on the installation of fasteners in the insulation & cover boards, and the application of adhesives, single-ply membrane, lapping, and hot air welding;
  • Participate in all inspections to include preparatory, initial, and final construction;
  • Ensure a complete roof system assembly, rated and installed to resist wind loads on a design for wind speed of 120 mph in accordance with ASCE 7 and other applicable building codes; and
  • Perform wind uplift resistance testing in accordance with Factory Mutual (FM) test procedures.

Through Thompson’s diligent attention to detail and expertise in the intricate requirements of this scope of work, this critical roof was successfully replaced.
