First Chemical’s barge loading dock, located at the Port of Pascagoula, was constructed in the mid-1960s. Due to corrosion at the splash zone, the dock sheet pile bulkhead failed, resulting in settlement of the on-grade slab that supported the mechanical piping and equipment used in the barge loading operations. First Chemical selected Thompson Engineering to provide professional engineering services for the repair of the failed bulkhead.
Thompson Engineering performed a geotechnical investigation and report to provide structural design parameters for the bulkhead design. Thompson performed environmental soil and water sampling to evaluate benzene, nitrobenzene, and lead concentration levels at the barge loading facility. Thompson also provided detailed engineering and construction drawings for the new bulkhead including required demolition, excavation, anchorage, tie-ins to the existing structure, backfilling, concrete slab-on-grade, and new fender system.
