The Mississippi Army National Guard (MSARNG) was responsible for preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to present the impacts that could result from proposed military activities on approximately 117,000 acres of the De Soto National Forest. The proposed construction projects included new ranges, facilities, and the development of a new Combined Arms Area (approximately 37,800 acres to include roads, bridges, wetland crossings, and other maneuver area requirements).
The Mobile District Corps of Engineers contracted with Thompson Engineering to assist in the development of the EIS. Thompson’s responsibilities included participating in the scoping and public meetings, development of portions of the document, direct coordination with the appropriate federal, state and local resource agencies as well as the interested Native American Tribes.
The EIS was completed in 2007. It identifies and evaluates alternatives that support national defense requirements in a manner that ensures long-term sustained yield, conservation, and protection of resources.
