In 2019, Thompson Engineering joined a design-build team working for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to reduce congestion at a highly traveled interchange near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The $132.6 million project reduces congestion where I-75 and I-24 cross. Both I-75 and I-24 provide a direct connection to downtown Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, and other Tennessee attractions.
The success of the project, which was completed in August 2021, was credited to an integrated delivery method known as design-build. Design-build construction combines all or some portions of the design and construction phases of a project – including design, right-of-way acquisition, regulatory permit approvals, utility relocation, and construction – into a single contract.
Thompson Engineering was hired to provide Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) services for the full scope of the project. CEI is a quality control service and one of the important elements of construction and contract administration. CEI provides the oversight necessary to ensure engineering design and properly-prepared plans and specifications are followed, allowing for the expected project outcome. CEI inspection on this project was significant. Work included construction of 11 bridges, 17 retaining walls, one noise wall, several grading, drainage, ITS, and lighting improvements, and paving.
