Pier C Dock Rehabilitation

The design and rehabilitation of Pier C North, originally constructed circa 1939, provides the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) with an updated facility capable of supporting 1,500 pounds per square foot, and an adjacent storage yard supporting 1,000 pounds per square foot. The primary cargo handled at the site is steel products.

The rehabilitation project encompassed a total of approximately 352,000 square feet of pier and storage yard area, including 21,000 square feet of relieving platform and a new fendering system. The new fendering system is more cost-effective, functions significantly better, requires less maintenance, and provides a more sustainable life. It replaced the previous timber fender pile and chock system with a vertical pipe pile system.

The project included coordination with ASPA on budget, schedule, and quality management; design team management; field data gathering; utility identification and relocation activities; conceptual and detailed design and construction documents; quality assurance; and construction support services. Major elements of the scope included surveying; concrete restoration; pier structure renovations including additional piling, storm water design, and drainage modifications; open storage yard replacement; utility and lighting improvements; and erosion and sediment control plans.

As part of the project, Thompson performed an alternative design study that considered various options and costs for final surface of the storage yard (i.e., cast-in-place concrete, roller compacted concrete, concrete pavers, and asphalt concrete). Based on life cycle analysis, concrete pavers were chosen for the storage yard surface.
