The Fallen Five Memorial honors five service members killed in attacks on two military sites in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2015. The memorial is constructed in the Tennessee River park near the U.S. Naval Operational Support Center and Marine Corps Reserve Center where the attacks occurred. The memorial’s design calls for a large, metal wreath suspended between five pillars representing the Fallen Five.
Thompson provided multiple services for the memorial including preliminary and field geotechnical investigation, foundation design plans, civil layout, utility identification, and survey for accessibility and floodplain mapping. The design of the memorial made this a challenging engineering project. Careful coordination between the structural engineer of the memorial’s columns and Thompson’s geotechnical and structural foundation engineering was required. The source and carving of the stone columns and the design of the internal support were modified during the foundation design. Detailed depiction and communication between the design teams were required to provide clear installation instructions with safe design. Further coordination with architects and fabricators for aesthetic features, lighting, and conduit revised or added after the foundation design was necessary to ensure the foundation’s integrity. Finally, experienced concrete placement inspectors on-site during concrete delivery proved useful to guide form and finish contractors in the successful concrete placement of critical foundation components including grout insets, paver infill elevations, and anchor alignment during placement.
Construction of the memorial began in September 2019. Thompson Engineering also assisted with construction inspection and materials testing at the planned memorial site.
