Thompson Engineering and affiliated company Watermark Design Group provided services for a new 12,137 square-foot, four-bay fire station for the City of Mobile. Watermark Design Group provided architectural services and Thompson served as a sub-consultant providing engineering design and environmental services for the project.
The building design arranges the business and training on one side of the apparatus bay and the crew living quarters on the other. The business and living areas feature a triage area for first-aid services, administrative offices, and crew living quarters for 17 people per shift with kitchen and dayroom areas. The apparatus bays accommodate seven vehicles: two fire engines, one 48’ ladder truck, one Hazmat, one mini-pumper, one ambulance, and one Sprinter fire truck.
The structural system includes load-bearing concrete masonry units with stucco finish for the exterior walls, limited structural steel at the truck bays, and steel joist framing and roof deck. The design features a barrel vault at the apparatus bay complete with exposed curved steel joists. The roofing systems include both metal panel and modified bituminous. The building is supported on a shallow foundation system with a slab on grade at the main floor. Thompson’s environmental services team assisted the project with Phase I and Phase II investigation as well as the stormwater construction best management practices plan (CMBPP) and inspection.
Located in the heart of the Crichton community in Mobile, Alabama, the new fire station allowed for the closure of two smaller aging stations.
