Thompson Engineering was selected to provide Construction Engineering Inspection for an 8-mile long roadway and bridge widening project on I-20 between Moody and Pell City. I-20 is the major artery between Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia, with an average daily traffic count of 60,000. The project consisted of the addition of one new travel lane in each direction.
This work required the construction of two new dual AASHTO girder bridges, with lengths of 276 feet and 220 feet. One additional dual bridge was widened to accommodate the new lanes. Numerous pre-cast and cast-in-place culverts, as well as pipe culverts were constructed, lengthened or installed. There was 400,000 cubic yards of excavation to be moved, with cuts and fills up to 90 feet. Most of the excavation was rock, and multiple areas required blasting within 30 feet of the existing travel way. Because of the numerous cross-streams in the project limits, extensive erosion control measures were used. Two, tier-one waterways, Kelly and Cane Creeks, flow through the project.
