As engineer of record, Thompson Engineering employed its fleet of full service engineering and architecture experts for what will be the first museum dedicated to the Gulf Coast’s rich maritime traditions. GulfQuest is a 90,000 square foot interactive museum under construction along the Mobile River, and will be the centerpiece of Mobile Landing, which was also designed by Thompson Engineering. The design of the high-tech museum features a large globe rising through the roof, representing the Gulf’s connection to the world. The simulation of a ship’s bridge, or control deck, reflects Mobile’s nautical connections. Other design features include observation decks, an orientation theater, meeting rooms and rooftop event space. A ferry and a bus terminal are incorporated into the design, and will shuttle guests to the museum, one of only three in the world dedicated to maritime history. Completion of the museum is scheduled for 2012.
