Project Location: Mobile, Alabama
|
In one of the most ambitious projects Thompson Engineering has ever facilitated, Mobile Aerospace Engineering (MAE), in conjunction with the Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) and supported by a $5 million grant from the State of Alabama, was able to expand its Mobile, Alabama operations with the addition of 144,500 square feet of hangar space at Brookley Field. To accommodate the tight schedule demanded by our clients business commitments, Thompson Engineering partnered with a local industrial contractor for this fast-track design/ build effort. The expansion consisted of two 72,250-square-foot wings connected to an existing hangar building with the first wing providing beneficial occupancy in just 90 days.
Each of the 92-foot-tall building wings was sized to house planes as large as the Boeing 747-400 series, with an interior clear span of 274 feet. Following site preparation and demolition activities, the foundation and slab systemwhich included approximately 7,500 cubic yards of concretewas completed for both wings in just four weeks. The work also incorporated the lighting and electrical support, fire protection, and pneumatic systems required for such structures.
Thompson Holdings personnel provided surveying, geotechnical engineering and design, site-civil design, structural design, electrical design, mechanical design, architectural design, and construction materials testing and inspection services for the project. The second wing of the hangar was completed in April 2004. The entire fast-track project was completed in only 6 months. |
